(5) Bringing it All Together

Throughout this project, I wanted to highlight the importance of farmers markets to local cities and communities, how they can be connected to the history and urbanization of Richmond in particular, and overall why they create such a positive experience for customers with reference to my own personal experiences. Even now that I am away at college during the year and live in a new city besides Richmond, I still make an effort to attend the Charlottesville City Farmers Market, and find it a very fun fall morning activity with my roommates to ride the trolley downtown and experience the local farmers market.

To link back to the key terms, we clearly see how ideas of urbanism and progress are connected to the history and the development of farmers markets. Urbanism and the growth of cities can be seen as being a catalyst for the emergence of farmers markets as it provided farmers with new opportunities to sell their products. Next, notions of progress can be seen through a number of lenses: in the development of the city of Richmond in terms of urbanization, economic growth, advancements in transportation, as well as in the growth and the increased importance of farmers markets in America, and lastly in reference to the ups and downs of the development of the 17th Street Farmers Market. Farmers markets in America will only continue to grow and prosper as they play a vital role in social and economic spheres of the cities and communities in which they are located.
